Aperitivo in Ostuni

Last week, we did a little whirlwind trip to Puglia. It was only 4 days, so we didn’t get to see too much or stay too long in one place. Puglia has a certain charm and natural beauty that makes you want to stay for just about….forever!

On our first day, we visited Ostuni, the white city. After taking a nice walk around the city, we decided to stop at a cafe in the main piazza for a little before dinner drink/very late lunch. We found Casbah Art Cafe, which has a nice little outdoor seating area that has amazing views of the green countryside leading to the sea.

I ordered a Spritz and the chef got a local beer. Well, what can I say about a Spritz? For those of you who don’t know, it is prosecco mixed with Aperol and a blast of soda water. Damn good and refreshing. And easy to make! It was well made and very welcome after a long, hot day in the car.

The real star of the apertivo, however, was the beer! O.M.G. This seriously has to be one of my favorite beers I have ever tried! (And I like beers!) Casbah serves a selection of three local beers from a brewery called Birranova, out of Triggiano. We had the “Linfa,” an Italian Golden Ale which was out of this world. It was a well balanced brew with nice strong citrus and herby flavors. I could see this going really well with fresh fish dishes typical of the area or just on its own with a few bar snacks. Birranova is on the right track, that is for sure! I can’t wait to (eventually) try the rest of their beers and see how the beer industry grows in Puglia over the coming years. (And when they start exporting to America!!!)

There’s lots more left from the Puglia trip, so stay tuned. I don’t know how regular my posting will be because we are in the final week here in Naples. 9 days to be exact!
